How to install MediaTomb on Ubuntu Server Lucid/Karmic
If you intend using a UPnP client (such as a PS3 for example) to access media on your server then MediaTomb is a great application to enable you to do this.
Installing MediaTomb is actually very straightforward and the following procedure works equally well for Ubuntu Lucid 10.04, Karmic 9.10, Jaunty 9.04 and Intrepid 8.10.
MediaTomb is available in the Synaptic Package Manager. So, from the gnome desktop menu choose System -> Administration and launch the Synaptic Package Manager, type mediatomb in the Quick Search box and then place a check against mediatomb in the list of results returned and then click Mark For Installation. Next click the Apply button and then the Apply button once again for confirmation.
NOTE: If you don’t have the Synaptic Package Manager then you can install it by issuing sudo apt-get install synaptic from a Terminal or Putty session.
Install MediaTomb using the Command Line (either via Putty or by typing directly onto the server):
To install MediaTomb via command line type the following two commands:
sudo apt-get update
followed by
sudo apt-get install mediatomb
and answer Y when prompted.
Launching MediaTomb
Once MediaTomb has finished installing you can launch MediaTomb by typing http://MyMediaServer:49152 into the address bar of your browser where MyMediaServer is the name you gave your server when installing Ubuntu. The IP address of your server will work equally well too if you can’t remember the name of your server.
